NPHCDA Revitalizes 901 Health Centers Nationwide: A Transformative Move for Nigeria

The NPHCDA has stated that more than 901 primary health care centers (PHCs) have been rejuvenated throughout Nigeria.

During the 2025 first-quarter press conference, Dr. Muyi Aina, who serves as the Executive Director of NPHCDA, addressed the media and revealed this information. He further stated that achieving this major milestone is an integral component of their comprehensive plan to enhance Nigeria’s primary healthcare infrastructure.

He stated, "A real-time dashboard has been implemented to monitor our advancement, allowing Nigerians to witness the proof firsthand. Anyone can click and view the condition of the Primary Health Centers."

The initiative seeks to enhance the management of finances and programs, expand access to healthcare services, and train additional medical personnel.

The organization has successfully trained 60,470 front-line healthcare providers across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, aiming for a total of 120,000 within four years.

Relating to the call for declaring a state of emergency regarding polio eradication, UNICEF appeals to the Kano government. The foundation extends health insurance coverage to 300 underprivileged individuals in Kwoi. The President of the PPP: Nisa Board Medical Group commends the management of Garki Hospital following the concession.

To enhance the healthcare system even more, the NPHCDA has boosted financial resources for primary healthcare centers.

In 2024, the agency distributed ₦22 billion to various states via the NPHCDA portal, with an additional ₦51 billion allocated through all four BHCPF channels. These funds aim to enhance service quality for patients at these facilities.

The organization is concurrently enhancing the administration of health care funds via a novel primary health care financial management application. This app, having undergone testing in four states, will assist medical centers in automating the creation of their business plans, record-keeping processes, and reporting.

The NPHCDA's initiatives are yielding positive outcomes, as numerous PHCs have observed a rise in patient turnout along with a decrease in patients being referred to secondary and tertiary care centers.

Aina further emphasized that the agency’s efforts are essential for meeting the government’s objective of expanding healthcare service accessibility to every Nigerian.

The agency's emphasis on primary healthcare aligns with the government's initiatives aimed at decreasing maternal mortality.

Nigeria has traditionally faced a significant maternal mortality rate, and the NPHCDA is tackling this issue with programs such as the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII).
