Several major health entities including Green Life Pharmaceuticals, Green Life Hospital, Seagreen Pharmaceutical, and Clearline HMO have teamed up to spearhead an extensive initiative aimed at boosting public awareness and preventive measures.
This effort was motivated by a shared objective: to eliminate malaria in Nigeria via educational campaigns, active community involvement, and improved accessibility to testing and treatment services.
The event organized at the University of Lagos on Friday had the theme "Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite."
Many students and community participants came together to join in complimentary malaria screenings and obtain prevention packages along with medicines, thanks to the joint efforts of partnering organizations. Apart from handing out these healthcare resources, this gathering acted as an essential stage for enlightening youths regarding malaria—its signs, preventive measures—and also highlighted the risks associated with substance misuse concerning overall well-being.
During his introductory comments, Mr. Peter Nwosu, who serves as the Executive Director at Green Life Pharmaceuticals, stressed the significance of the occasion, describing it as both an anniversary celebration and a meaningful initiative. "Our presence today signifies more than simply observing a worldwide health consciousness day; we aim to create tangible change within this dynamic community," he remarked. He underlined the gravity of malaria, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, and reiterated the company's dedication to enhancing public well-being via their corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Dr. Oghenerukevwe Peretomode, a Medical Officer at Clearline HMO, emphasized the importance of collaborative action between governmental bodies and individual citizens to decrease the prevalence of malaria. She advocated for additional financial resources, innovative approaches, and enhanced public awareness campaigns aimed at bolstering malaria prevention initiatives. "Each person bears responsibility," she stated, highlighting measures such as utilizing insecticide-treated bed nets, keeping surroundings tidy, and refraining from practices that encourage mosquito proliferation—such as improperly disposing waste into drainage areas. Furthermore, Dr. Peretomode highlighted how climate shifts, marked by heightened instances of floods and elevated temperatures, exacerbate the surge in malaria occurrences, thereby underlining the necessity for environmentally conscious behavior.
The emphasis on youth at the event was deliberate. As stated by Mr. Chris Ikeagu, the General Manager of Green Life Hospital, "We selected UNILAG with the intention of engaging young individuals directly. It is they who can spread the message within their families and neighborhoods. While older age groups are well aware of malaria, we feel that preventive measures should begin through educating younger populations."
He highlighted the lethal character of malaria and stressed again that prompt recognition and correct therapy are crucial for fighting this illness.
