Accra, April 26, GNA - The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN), an NGO, has urged all parties involved to make a fresh pledge towards eradicating malaria.
As stated by AMMREN, the theme for this year’s World Malaria Day, "Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite," wasn’t merely a catchphrase but an urgent call to action aimed at rallying collective effort beyond national boundaries.
In a statement issued for the observance of the 2025 World Malaria Day, Dr. Charity Binka, who serves as the Executive Secretary of AMMREN, called for significant financial commitments and strengthened political resolve to hasten progress toward eradicating malaria globally.
"We need to invest again in effective strategies, rethink our methods for controlling malaria, and revitalize both political and community efforts to eradicate this disease," she stated.
The most recent data from the WHO’s 2024 Annual Report reveal a somber statistic with around 263 million global malaria cases, resulting in roughly 597,000 fatalities.
The African region experienced the highest burden, with 95% of all cases and 96% of fatalities, and the majority affected were children under the age of five.
The statement pointed out that the battle against malaria was still uncertain even though significant strides had been achieved over time, particularly due to reduced financial support and new worldwide health challenges. It underscored the importance of continuous promotion and responsibility to address these issues effectively.
An essential aspect of this advocacy involved harnessing the influence of the media, with AMMREN consequently urging journalists, editors, and media outlets to increase their reporting on malaria-related topics.
"A well-educated media has the potential to influence behavior, promote the implementation of preventative measures, and guarantee that malaria stays a key focus in national and international public health initiatives," the declaration stated.
The media plays an essential part in magnifying local voices, showcasing creative answers, and maintaining scrutiny on policymakers to ensure action.
